The gist of Levitical
writing is that God is in control. Even down to how we value things
on this earth and what we consider as important. Even to the
separation of male, female, and child; even to the evaluation of what
is truly holy and what is unclean among the created beasts. While the
priests make the estimation of the holiness of a value of beasts, God
ultimately controls those evaluations. God determines who has the
authority and responsibility to make those evaluations. (Leviticus
27:1-34)
And as Jesus says the traditions, the words, the literal
words, became more important than the Spirit of God and the
legalities involved more critical and essential than the intent of
God. (Mark 7:9-13) Jesus is trying to impress upon the Jews and us
that it is God who is in control, not the interpretation of words by
men.
